The
hot Italian summer of 1982; four young Dutch saxophonists rehearsing
in Via Aurelia in Rome; the beginning of a sensational, pioneering chamber-music
ensemble: the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet.
Then came:
Concerts throughout the world from Suntory Hall in Tokyo to the Gewandhaus in Leipzig – not to mention the little church in Marken-Binnen in the Dutch province of Noord-Holland and a municipal centre in Oristano, Sardinia which smelt of beer.
Radio and television performances from Washington, DC to Tirana, Albania. Broadcasts on the Emmeloord Patients’ Radio Network to TV Wolgograd.
Currently nine CDs to the group’s name, one of which won an Edison and international praise, setting a new standard for saxophone quartets the world over.
Collaboration with artists from all disciplines, including dance and theatre (Peter Drost, René Groothof), as well as a great many musicians: pianists Ivo Janssen and Juan Pablo Dobal, bandoneon players Gustavo Toker and Carel Kraaijenhof, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Georgian women’s choir Mzetamze, the gamelan ensemble Multifoon, Slagwerkgroep Den Haag, the Japanese saxophone quartet Trouvčre, the Hague Residentie Orchestra, the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and others.
Over seventy world premieres of works by ter Veldhuis, Goldstein, Keuris, Andriessen and many others. The group gives compositions the chance to grow and plays pieces frequently so that they are heard often.
Astounding and ambitious arrangements. String quartets by Ravel, Debussy and Shostakovich. The Art of Fugue, the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti. Pushing boundaries for our one great love: the saxophone quartet.
Codarts Big Band
The Codarts Big Band, consisting of jazzstudents from Codarts, University of the Arts, has a good reputation for live performances.
The Codarts Big Band has a very diverse repertoire: from modern and Cuban/Latin jazz to Brazilian and Flamenco jazz. The orchestra is conducted by Ilja Reijngoud, professor of trombone at the Rotterdam Conservatory.
In 2007 and 2008 the band performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival and they played in the program of North Sea Jazz Round Town.

New Trombone Collective
Since
its formation the New Trombone Collective has taken its place in the
forefront of the ensemble world in the Netherlands as well as abroad.
Musicality, creativity and a wonderful team spirit are key words when describing
the New Trombone Collective.
With their surprising presentations and superb playing the New Trombone
Collective shows its audiences that the trombone has acquired an important
place as a classical chamber music instrument in the 21st century.
Working closely with composers they present an unusual combination of instruments,
styles and playing techniques. But at no time do they lose sight of the
role of the trombone as a classical instrument. With the emphasis on innovation
and tradition their adventuresome programming gives a unique perspective
on the trombone.
The New Trombone Collective appeals to a wide audience of listeners as
well as composers, music critics, amateur players and similar ensembles
with their programming of standard repertoire along with the commissioning
and performing of new compositions. In this way the New Trombone Collective
have proven that there is a great future for the trombone. And they intend
to keep pursuing it!
The festival Slide Factory organized by the New Trombone Collective has
been cited as the official trombone festival in Europe by the International
Trombone Association. The New Trombone Collective has collaborated with
many exciting ensembles (Doelen Quartet, Ensemble Caméléon,
Amstel Saxophone Quartet) and soloists such as Christian Lindberg, Michel
Becquet, Joseph Alessi, Mark Nightingale, Bart van Lier and Marcel Beekman..
Their
discography is being brought out by the Etcetera label. With the launch
of the CD ‘new’ during this festival the triptych ‘new
trombone collective’ is now complete. A selection of pieces that
have been arranged and composed for the New Trombone Collective are available
under their own line “New Trombone Collective Series” at Warwick
Music in England.
The New Trombone Collective is delighted to be sponsored by Antoine Courtois
Paris. NTC's commissions and recordings are available from and Warwick
Music Ltd., one of the world's leading brass music publishing companies.

Rotterdams Philharmonic Orchestra
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra is the musical heart of the city of Rotterdam. Soon after its foundation in 1918, the ensemble evolved into one of the leading orchestras in the Netherlands.
Between 1930 and 1962, the orchestra came into its first period of bloom under the direction of Eduard Flipse. It was Flipse who laid the foundation for the tradition of precision ensemble playing which later became the orchestra's hallmark. After the appointment in 1973 of the then still very young conductor Edo de Waart, the orchestra gained international acclaim. De Waart conducted the Rotterdam Philharmonic in many outstanding recordings and on several successful international tours. Since 1995 the celebrated Russian conductor Valery Gergiev has been the orchestra's Music Director. He initiated the Gergiev Festival Rotterdam which has grown out to be one of the orchestra's major events.
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra's repertoire not only covers all periods of music history, but music genres beyond the realm of the traditional as well. By frequently commissioning and performing premieres the orchestra keeps in touch with contemporary music. In addition, the orchestra is actively building on it's already substantial opera tradition. The annual opera productions in cooperation with the Netherlands Opera are received with unanimous praise by audiences and critics alike.
Ambition and innovation have always been an important part of the Rotterdam Philharmonic's artistic make-up. One of the orchestra's key goals is making the symphonic repertoire accessible for as many different audiences as possible. New initiatives, especially in the educational field, are continually explored. This involves that children are an ever more important and growing target group.
Each year, approximately 110,000 music lovers visit the Rotterdam Philharmonic's concerts in de Doelen, the most important centre of cultural life in Rotterdam.

Slide Factory Trombone Choir
You, yourself can perform during the Slide Factory Festival and participate in the Slide Factory Trombone Choir. Together with all other festival participants you will form the impressive choir and be part of a huge spectacle at the Schouwburgplein.
The choir will play a piece that is especially composed by Andrew Peggie.
The work consists of parts of different levels of difficulty and is therefore
appropriate for trombonists of any level. The parts can be found on the
website a couple of weeks previous to the festival, so that you can download
and practice the most suitable part. Of course this will be rehearsed
during the festival. For the performance, each amateur will be paired
with a conservatory student or a professional. This buddy system ensures
that everyone will have enough confidence to perform the part. There
will always be someone next to you who plays the same part as you do
and who can give you directions if needed.
In the spectacle at the square all participants to the festival will come together
to play in the Slide Factory Trombone Choir: students of the four conservatories,
amateur musicians, members of the Rotterdam Brass Band School, and of
course the many ensembles, trombonists, and soloists who play at the
festival.
The Young Sinatras launched themselves in 2002 at the Leidse Jazzweek and made a phenomenal appearance at the North Sea Festival the same year.
Soon after, in May 2003 they presented their first CD - “The Unknown” - based on Sinatra/Count Basie repertoire. It solidated their reputation in the Dutch jazz-scene. Currently they keep creating new arrangements, compositions and songs by modern jazz-singers.
They performed in Dutch theatres and festivals together with singers such as Tom Gäbel and Wouter Hamel. In 2006 Paul van Kessel had his debut performance with the Young Sinatras which was broadcasted in national television. His voice combined with the fresh sound of the Young Sinatras makes a beautiful mix. Prepare yourself for a sparkling show with Paul in the lead at the various festivals in Europe.
Young Trombone Collective
The
New Trombone Collective has been looking toward the festival for the
best talents among the youngest trombone players in the Netherlands.
From all over Holland these trombonists came together on the selection
day in January.
The most talented trombonists are selected and they
will make their debut during Slide Factory 2009 as the Young Trombone
Collective.
