Some countries have something
special with the trombone. Sometimes because of the many
pieces written for the instrument or because of the development
of the trombone itself. During Slide Factory 2009 special
emphasis will be put on Hungary. The Franz Liszt Academy
in Budapest is a very special academy in Hungary where
all trombonists of the Corpus Trombone Quartet have studied.
In this concert they show their country’s rich tradition
in co-operation with the international known Csaba Wagner
(bass trombonist of the Staatskapelle Berlin) who
was also a student of this academy. |

Four of the world’s best
trombone classes play together in one concert: Michel Becquet’s
classes from Lyon and Lausanne, Joseph Alessi’s class from
New York, Stefan Schulz’s class from Berlin, and the class
of Jörgen van Rijen/Pierre Volders/Ben van Dijk from Rotterdam.
In the week previous to the festival they will have attended the international
master class by these guest lecturers. During this
week they will look for the similarities and differences
between their worlds and styles. You will hear the spectacular
result in this concert. The classes present themselves
individually and they play some pieces together – the new
generation of trombonists together on one stage!

When Christian Lindberg was the main guest at the Slide Factory 2005 festival we had a dream. After four years this dream has become a reality. The trombonists of the New Trombone Collective and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra are playing the world premiere of a piece from the most celebrated and famous trombonist ever: Christian Lindberg. Lindberg also conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in his new role as international conductor. Light and darkness are the themes in Scandinavian music. Nielsen steers in Helios the sun god with a fiery carriage along the sky. Lindberg lets the trombone collective shine over the orchestra like a midsummer sun. Sibelius’ Swan of Tuonela paints the black river of the underworld, whereas in Rautavaara’s Symphony Nr. 7 Angel of Light, a new day is born.

One of Holland’s best rhythm sections will make sure that two international jazz trombonists can peak. Harry Watters from New Orleans and Nils Wogram from Germany take the challenge and join the podium together. Where do their worlds meet, where do they go their own way and where do they find each other again? Two heroes with a totally different background make sure that this concert is a special encounter between the jazz traditions from USA and Europe.

International trombone students of conservatories from New York, Lyon, Lausanne, Berlin, and Rotterdam will have taken master classes in the week before the start of Slide Factory and they have formed ensembles. They walk through the city in trios or quartets as if they were real street musicians. They pop up everywhere in the city, on every corner of every street, in shopping malls, at the train station, or in the middle of the street with short surprise concerts. Trombone music spreads all over the city and it all ends in a big spectacle on the Schouwburgplein: Meet the World. |
