CLINICS

During Slide Factory, top trombonists from all over the world will come to town. They play beautiful concerts but they also present a number of interesting clinics. This is the moment to fire all your questions and meet the celebrities. Attend the Joseph Alessi clinic or learn more on how a trombone is made, and warm-up every day during the Slide Factory warm-up sessions.

Start the day with a joint warm-up session which they combine with sharing a vision on the basic techniques of playing the trombone. A very relaxing way – for all festival visitors who play the trombone - to start a Slide Factory day fresh!

Learn everything about the benefits of Alexander technique, during this. The technique is used to avoid injuries and also to play in a more efficient way. In addition to Alexander technique, Erik will discuss breathing techniques and the importance of good breathing.

Slide Factory requested the Corpus Quartet and Csaba Wagner (the quartet’s former bass trombonist) to reflect on their education and the Hungary “trombone school”. These young but already very successful musicians share their experiences with the visitors of the festival.

What will Christian Lindberg have in store for the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Trombone Collective? What sensations will the composer have for us up his sleeve? Shortly before he makes his conducting debut at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Christian Lindberg will lift the veil and tells us more about his newest creation “The Waves of Wollongong.” For more information on this latest piece please visit the Lindberg Special.
 

Clinic Meet the maestros

Joseph Alessi and Christian Lindberg, probably the world’s most famous classical trombonists, each will play a piece. Alessi will play the world premiere of a piece especially written for him: “Love's Notes” by Nicola Ferro. Lindberg will play his own piece for solo trombone: “Joe Jack Binglebandit”. Furthermore they will give explanations and the audience can ask questions.

Nils Ole Bo Johansen, Chris Houlding, and George Wiegel, all three masters in teaching the trombone, compare the educational systems of the various countries where they taught. Nils knows Scandinavia well, Chris knows England and Germany, and George the Benelux. Maybe one of these gentlemen can’t resist the temptation to play a piece…
 

Clinic Making a historic sackbut

Geert Jan van der Heide is a well known builder of historical instruments in the Netherlands. He has specialised in the reproduction of instruments built in the past centuries. He is famous for his refined building techniques, his precise reproductions, and his vast knowledge of the history of the trombone. Slide Factory has asked Geert Jan van der Heide to share his knowledge and to present a review of the history of our beloved instrument.
